Turns out the glowing magical circle in front of the demonic mirror was, in fact, Protection From Evil.

Obituary:

Not the brightest torch in the shed, Alan was a standup fellow and all around nice guy. Bravely he would charge in and aid those in need. He was a mercenary who worried about helping first, and usually forgot about payment.

Always eager to help the people, Alan joined with a group of seasoned adventurers who were seeking a bit more muscle to take down a hag who'd been kidnapping people outside of town. It went well, up until they started searching the hag's residence. Alan stumbled upon a large, obviously demonic, full-body mirror. In front of the mirror was an large, conspicuous magic circle. Unfortunately for the ever-paranoid Alan, that magic circle was, in fact, Protection From Evil. Alan did not survive the encounter with the demonic mirror, and so he rests. Just not very peacefully.
