Obituary:

The vampire hunter Sular was snatched up by the Mists of Ravenloft in his youth. In the hellish mists of the Domains of Dread, he survived the Grand Conjunction, the wrath of Strahd, evil clones birthed of horrifically fumbled healing spells, and everything else the Darklords could throw at him. Never once did he stray from the path of righteousness in four hellish years, even when the dark rites of Azalin temporarily transformed him into one of the bloodthirsty vampires he so despised.

Leader of an unlucky life, he critically failed at least one saving throw practically every single night of his AD&D career. His bad luck culminated in the night he rolled a max damage crit for 60 damage against a Thessalhydra, only to have it bite off his sword hand the following round. Given the fear of a spell as mighty as regeneration spell going horrendously awry (as so much healing had before), a sensible person would have taken the hint and retired. But not Sular. He cauterized the stump, gave his bow to the damned elf, strapped his shield on arm and spent the entire next XP level taking penalties while he learned to wield his +3 bastard sword left-handed.

Sular was slain with the rest of his party to the base treachery when the Dark Powers corrupted one of his companions to the cause of evil. While stretched out on the rack in a Darklord's prison, the betrayer called in two favors owed him by the god of tyranny. He summoned a pair of super-beholders to serve his whims at the cost of his soul and his humanity. He transformed into a beastlike monster and his minions laid waste to the prison. When the rest of the party found out that the beast had sold his soul to evil to free himself, they decided to part ways in the morning and hope never to see his face again.

The heroes thought the parting was amicable enough to let the betrayer and his beholders stand a watch that night. They were fools, The party cleric was disintegrated in the first round before he even had a chance to awaken.

Sular awoke swiftly and fought like a man possessed. His final night would go down in history as the only one in an entire four-year-long campaign where he never flubbed a single saving throw. Defended by his seemingly miraculous luck and a brooch of shielding to turn back the magic missiles, Sular landed blow after blow as one by one his companions turned to stone or were blasted by death rays. He managed to slay one of the horrendous beasts, and wounded the other, driving it into such despair that near the end it abandoned its apparently futile barrage of deadly eye rays, and *resorted to its 1d4 damage bite attack*.

Alas, before the second creature could be slain, Sular succumbed to a gradual accumulation of dozens of wounds. As an orphan of the mists, he has no survivors to avenge him on the traitor who ordered his death, but in the Domains of Dread, these things are not always left to one's descendants...
